Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that may occur anywhere in the urinary tract i.e., kidneys, bladder, prostate or urethra (water tube).

Symptoms of a UTI include:

  • Pain with urination (dysuria)

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Frequent urination

  • Feeling of urgency

  • Fever and chills

  • Loss of appetite and vomiting

  • Haematuria (presence of blood in urine)

  • Pain in the kidney region

When someone presents with a UTI, investigations are focused on risk factors, the cause of the UTI, treatment and prevention of complications and recurrent infections. Investigations may include urine tests, blood tests, imaging of kidneys (CT IVP or ultrasound) and in some cases a cystoscopy (camera placed in bladder to visualise the lower urinary tract).
